The organizing nominated to facilitate the establishment of Ethiopian media council, calls for all Ethiopia media houses and journalists to join hands for the establishment of the first independent and voluntary media council of the country.
This is indicated today (July 6, 2010) during the press briefing held at the Hilton hotel, here in Addis Ababa. The committee members invited all the media houses in the country for the organizing convention, which is scheduled to take place at the Horn of Africa Press Institute on Saturday July 10, 2010 in Addis Ababa.
The organizing committee among others includes Amare Aregawi of Reporter newspaper, Mimi Sibhatu of ZAMI FM 90.7, Abebech Welde from Ethiopian Media Women Association (EMWA) and three individuals representing different journalist associations.
The committee members stated that the major objective of the envisaged press council will not only be limited to ensuring media’s adherence to the highest professional and ethical standards, but also to safeguard and maintain press freedom in Ethiopia.
It is also noted that the council is also expected to serve as a regulatory body that will monitor the activities of the media and respond to complaints paused from the public based on noble examples derived from different countries.
Stating the challenges ahead of the organizing committee in bringing together all the media houses in the country to one table, Amare expressed his hope that the current fragmented and week media industry of the country have the council at the end.
The Saturday meeting is expected to state the aim and purpose of the organizing committee for all invited media owners.
For several years, Ethiopian media practitioners have been attempting to establish press council. Meanwhile, due to mainly their failure of understanding each other and lack of consensus, they are unable to have the envisioned press council so far.
Now, the question is: “Will all the media houses in Ethiopia take aside their individual and business related differences and stand for the development of press in Ethiopia?”
